One of the most important things you can do to ensure long battery life for your vehicle is to make certain that your battery is the correct size for your engine.

A battery that is too small will overwork your starter (not enough amps to turn the engine over) as well as your alternator (gets taxed from bringing the battery back to life from starting the engine).

Each manufacturer has recommended specifications to optimize the longevity of the starting and charging system.

The team at A-1 Electric is here make sure that you have the right battery for years of future service.

A SHORT LESSON ON BATTERIES

Batteries generally have a 4 to 5-year life span and then need to be replaced. We are happy to test your battery for you - just stop by and we can let you know how your battery life is doing. It’s certainly much more convenient to replace a dying battery than to get stranded somewhere once the battery dies.

There are two things you should be aware of when looking for a new battery: cold- cranking amps and reserve capacity.

Cold-cranking amps are the power output used to start a cold engine. The number of cold-cranking amps you need depends both on where you live as well as on your vehicle.

The colder an engine is, the more power it takes to turn the engine over to get it started because of the sluggish cold oil it has to deal with. Also, the chemical reaction in the battery that creates electrical energy is less efficient in the cold.

So the colder it gets the more power is needed, but the available power drops. So if you live where it's cold, you need a battery with more cold cranking amps than you do where the temperature is moderate or hot.

You should always get at least as many cold cranking amps as the manufacturer recommends, but you may want to upgrade if you live where it gets really cold - such as us in our lovely state of Michigan.

An important note - batteries can list both CA (Cranking Amps) and CCA (Cold-Cranking Amps) numbers. You want to compare CCA’s, not the CA's.

Interestingly and contrary to popular belief, high summertime temperatures pose a greater threat to battery longevity than wintertime lows. That’s because, while battery capacity is higher in the heat, high temperatures shorten overall battery life. The main reasons why are evaporation, overcharging and corrosion due to high heat. Michigan has the extremes of both cold and heat, so your batteries are taxed in both seasons.

Reserve capacity is a measurement of the number of minutes of reserve power the battery has at a given load. The number is more important these days because of parasitic drain. Parasitic drain (from the security system, remote start system and memory from various other systems) is the battery energy that's used when the key is off.
